Glossary of Bookbinding Terms



Techniques
Perfect Binding: The method of binding sheets of paper using glue only. [A typical paperback]
 
Reback: Replacing the damaged spine and hinges of the cover of an old book with new material.
 
Sewing: Hand: Using a needle and linen thread to attach the signatures one to the other through their center folds.

Drilled and tied: Single sheets of paper bound together by thread laced through holes drilled along the binding edge
 
 
Tight Backed vs. Hollow Tube: TB: A binding technique in which the leather of the spine is glued directly to the back
 
HT: A binding technique which allows the spine to be free of the back

Tooling/Stamping: When finishing work is done by hand held tools it is called tooling. When it is done by machine it is called stamping.
